As Gaurav had mentioned in his messages, Simran Gill, a renowned wildlife filmmaker had this incredible story of the living roots bridges. With a quick introduction on a couple of calls and a bunch of e-mails exchange, we finally met at the airport to my first ever trip to the North-Eastern part of the country.
With childlike enthusiasm I had over packed for the trip. Still with the hangover of the delivery for last project and sleepless nights, I was shamelessly snoring away the whole 3 hours flight from the Mumbai airport. After getting sticks jabbed in our nostrils and the pungent smell of a sanitiser gone bad, we came out of the Gauhati Airport with a LOT of luggage!
Manbah, our local line producer got us in his SUV and we headed straight to Shillong, capital city of Meghalaya state. Manbha is charming young man, a local of Shillong runs a beautiful cozy b&b and has immense knowledge about the place. He kept us totally entertained with his stories as we discussed about the concept on our way.
Next morning we left for the trek for the longest living root bridge and met Morning Star with his neighbour Bhaha.
The first sight of the bridge was just breathtaking, gigantic ‘Avatar’ trees and their never ending roots entwined together to create massive structures. These bridges aren’t built, they are grown!
Morning star is a charismatic young lad, who has taken it upon himself to revive the dying living root bridges.
